The “Belles of Melvin” captures four sisters lined up on a snow bank from oldest to youngest.  From L to R:  Margaret, Louise, Alice and Helen Bartlett were affectionately known as the “Belles of Melvin.”  They are assisting their father, Elmer, with the chore of shoveling snow although it appears they have been making “snow angels.”   Growing up without any brothers, the girls took on many tasks usually relegated to boys.  They hauled wood from their father’s excelsior mill for heating, assisted with barn chores, and harvested the garden.
